Karl Stengel was born in Hungary in 1925.
During his service in the military he spent years in a Russian prision of war camp. After the liberation he returned to Budapest and began his studies in painting and design.
With the Russian invasion in 1956 Stengel was forced to leave Hungary and settled in Munich.
He enrolled in the Academie der Bilden Künste, where he continued his studies in art, architecture, scenography and anatomy.
In the following years he spent time in Spain, La Marina, a small fishing village, dedicating himself to painting and design, using the driftwood fropm shipwrecks as material of his Holzbilder, "pictures of wood", wich were exhibited on a small gallery in Elche, and in Rome where he created his design for the Decamerone of Boccaccio.
Stengel was a professor of art at the Pädagogische Hochschule of the University of Munich and at the Volkshule.
For many years Stengel has also continued his work from his studio in Italy.
He died on June 25, 2017.
